About site and its Remains: An Introduction

Sanchi in Raisen district is situated at a distance of about 45km north-east of Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. Vidisa (Vidisha), originally the capital of ancient Akara region is about 10 km north-east of Sanchi. Crownin the hill of Sanchi (91 m.), a group of Buddhist monumer command a grand view of the area lying at the foot hill.

Sanchi variously known as Kakanaya, Kakanava, Kakanadabota and Bota Sri Parvata in ancient times, it has remarkable specimens of Buddhist art and architecture right from the early Mauryan period (circa third Century B.C.) to twelfth century A.D. Ashoka, the Mauryan emperor, is credited with erecting several monuments, including the Mahastupa (Stupa - 1), a monolithic pillar, and a monastery. Stupa No. 3 deserves special mention about the finding of Relics Caskets belong to Mahamoglyan and Sariputra (Sariputasa) the two important desciples of Buddha. Vesudes, Temple No. 17 is one of the earliest structures edifice of Gupta Period (4th CE). Over the centuries, Sanchi underwent numerous transformations, with the Sungas, Andhra-Satavahanas, Kushanas, and Guptas leaving their mark on the site. The result is a rich tapestry of architectural styles, including elaborately carved gateways, temples, and sculptures. After falling into disrepair, Sanchi was rediscovered in 1818, and subsequent excavations and conservation efforts have restored the site to its former glory. Today, the site museum, established by Sir John Marshall in 1919, showcases the history and significance of Sanchi, a testament to India's enduring cultural heritage.

Stupas No. 1

Stupa No. 1 was built by Emperor Ashoka in 3rd Century BCE with bricks. Subsequently, it was enlarge during Sunga and Satvahna period in stone masonry. It was further enhanced with Buddha images in the fifth-sixth century CE. It is largest amongst all which measures 36.68m in diameter and 16.46m in height, with four richly carved gateways depicting Buddhist Jatakas and life scenes of Buddha.

East Gateway Stupa No. 1

The Eastern Gateway scenes include trees of manushi Buddhas on the top architrave, while the middle architrave shows on the front side, the great departure of Buddha from Kapilavastu. The lowest architrave depicts Ashoka Maurya (273 – 232 B.C.), offering worship to Boddhi Tree. On the north pillar the depiction of Maya Devi, mother of Buddha dreaming of white elephant entering her womb, before conceiving the Buddha, is of particular interest.

West Gateway Stupa No. 1

The western Gateway with its architrave supported by pot- bellied dwarfs has some of the most interesting depictions. The top architrave portrays trees and stupas of manushi Buddhas (who preceded Buddha). The middle architrave symbolically represents the preaching of the first sermon at deer park, Sarnath. On the rear side, the lowest architrave shows defeat of Mara, the demon, who was preventing Buddha from attaining enlightenment. The scenes of Mahakapi, Sama and Chhaddanta Jatakas are also carved on the gateway.

North Gateway Stupa No. 1

North gateway consisting of two pillars & three architraves, is the best preserved among all the four gateways of stupa. Its pillars are crowned by four elephants, facing four cardinal directions and supporting the architraves above the columns. The space between the architraves is filled up with the figures of horse and elephant riders. Scenes related with Buddha’s life and his previous births are carved on these pillars which include his birth, great departure, first sermon, monkey offering a bowl of honey & Buddha ascending to heaven (Trayastrimsa). In all the representations Buddha is shown symbolically in form of a stupa, umbrella, footprints (Padukas) or tree. The back of the top architrave depicts Chhaddant Jatak and in the middle Sujata offering sweet rice (Payas). At the centre of the top architrave wheel of law (Dharma chakra, broken) is depicted.

South Gateway

The southern gateway of the stupa was the principal entrance built in the first century B.C. It is also the oldest of all the four gateways giving access to the great stupa. The architraves of this gateway are supported by four lions crowned at the top of its pillars. The depiction on this gateway includes the scenes of Buddha’s birth, worship of Ramgram Stupa by Ashoka Maurya (273-232 B.C.) & preaching of the first sermon at deer park Sarnath.

Stupa – 2

This stupa stands on a terrace, down the slop of the hill at a distance of about 320 metres. It resembles stupa 3 in form but does not possess any of the gateway. Its berm and parts of stairway balustrades are now exhibited in the Archaeological Museum. Its ground balustrade is decorated with lotus medallion and scenes from the life of Buddha. Its four L-shaped entrances are well preserved. Its double stairway faces east. On the basis of the palaeographical records found on its balustrade, it is dated to the last quarter of second century B.C.

Stupa – 3

This stupa is similar to that of stupa No. 1 except its dimension. It is smaller having the height of 8.23 meters excluding crowing members and 15 meters in diameter. The dome of the stupa is hemispherical and it has only one gateway. Only two upright bases of its ground balustrade have survived which have half lotus medallions at the ends with single facet in between. The stupa is significant in view of the fact that it was found to contain the relics of Sariputra and Mahamaudgalyayana, the two foremost disciples of Buddha. On the basis of inscriptional record, it is dated to 2nd century B.C.

Temple – 17

This temple marks the beginning of temple architecture in India. The temple consists of a flat-roofed square sanctum with a portico in front, supported on four pillars. Its pillars are composed of a shaft passing from square to eight and sixteen sides, a bell shaped lotus, a cable-filleted neck and a block abacus surmounted by a square lion capital. The capital has four lions each with two bodies. The doorjambs of the façade contain vertical bands of foliate and rosette designs, while pilasters on the side similar to pillars have bell shaped lotuses followed by block abaci. It is a master piece of temple Architecture of Gupta Period.

Temple – 45

This towering temple along with its attached monastery is located on the eastern extremity of the site. The construction of this temple belongs to two periods of which the earlier one dates from the 7th - 8th century A.D. and is represented by the structural remains like small section of the platform, the cells on the north, south and west sides, the pavements of the courtyard, the kerb at the edge of the pillared verandah and remnants of a solitary pillar. The later construction of 10th – 11th century A.D. is characterized by the extant portion of the spire. At this stage the temple consists of a roughly square garbha-griha, externally surmounted by a hollow spire (shikhara). The miniature niches are enshrined with seated Buddha in meditation towards east and Manjushri Buddha towards south. Most of the sculptural and architectural members cladding the structure have been dislodged due to ravage of time & nature.

Monolithic Pillars

Several monolithic pillars at Sanchi serve as memorials, with the one erected by Ashoka (Pillar 10) being a notable example. Located at the south gateway of Stupa No. 1, it features a mirror-like polish and an inscription warning against creating schisms within the Buddhist sangha. Its magnificent lion capital is now preserved in the Site Museum. Another unique pillar (No. 35) features a standing figure of Vajrapani and twelve pairs of holes for a metallic halo. Several other free-standing columns of later dates can also be found at Sanchi.

Ashokan Pillar

This pillar was erected by Ashoka Maurya in 3rd century B.C. At present only the shaft of the pillar is survived and the base portion stands in situ near the southern gateway & its broken remains are kept in the shed while its capital is exhibited in the Archaeological Museum. This round and slightly tapering tall pillar with mirror like polish is one of the finest columns erected by Ashoka (273-232 B.C.) It is inscribed in Brahmi script with Ashoka’s threat of excommunication of any monk or nun from the Buddhist order who attempts to create schism in the sangh.

Monastery - 51

This monastery is located at a distance of about 7 meters below the main terrace. It measurers 33.22 meters from north to south and 32.69 meters from east to west and consists of an open courtyard at the centre with an enclosing verandah and a range of cells behind. Its main entrance through the eastern wall is flanked on either side by a massive pylon. The monastery has 22 cells in all with an entrance on the east and a spacious chamber on the west. Interestingly, its stone walls are extensively veneered with flat bricks.
