1.Introduction The Archaeological Museum at Halebidu is one of the treasures of Hoysala art. It is known for its large, rich, and varied collection and display of sculpture and architectural specimens in the museum. Though the earliest attempts at the collection of sculptures had begun as early as the 1890s, it was not on a large scale. Later on, Rev. Father Aduard Lovental, a Danish missionary, had collected some sculptures and sent them to the Copenhagen Museum, Denmark. But a systematic display and protection of the sculpture began only in 1961, with the establishment of the present museum by the Archaeological Survey of India. The museum is located within the premises of the Hoysaleshwara Temple complex. It has three galleries. Of these, two are open-air galleries. The exhibited antiquities include wall sculptures, friezes, lintel units, door jambs, Sikhara units, inscription pedestals, Jaina sculptures and memorials, miniature figurines, gold coins, copper plates, marble and bronze sculptures, wooden carvings, and many others.
Displayed Objects The Archaeological Museum at Halebidu contains many relics of the Hoysala capital and its neighboring area. These objects of varied nature represent gods and goddesses of the Hindu and Jaina pantheon, Yaksha and Yakshis, copper plates, inscriptions, architectural members, and miscellaneous items. The following is a selection of works from the museum’s collection and illustrates a range of material. Some objects are discussed in terms of their iconography, others in terms of their connection to various facets of social life at the time they were created. The other exhibited antiquities include wall sculptures, friezes, lintel units, door jambs, Sikhara units, inscription pedestals, Jaina sculptures and memorials, miniature figurines, gold coins, copper plates, marble and bronze sculptures, wooden carvings, and many others.
Indoor Gallery The indoor gallery of this museum has some good collections. The Hoysala sculptures include Siva and Parvathi, Vishnu, Brahma and Ganesha, and Kartikeya, Bhairava. The Hoysala images exhibited inside the gallery are Parvati, Bhairava, Brahma etc. The figure of Parvati is highly intricate and sensuously represented. Bhairava sculpture, though partly mutilated, the details of realistically carved hairlocks and physiques are worth mentioning here. All the figures undoubtedly exhibit the classic quality of the mature sculptural style.
Besides, 17th-century wood figurines originally constituting a chariot at Belur, another important centre of Hoysala art, are also on display. The wooden figures include ten incarnations of Vishnu, viz., Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Parashurama, Rama etc. Also found in wood are Mahishasuramardhini, Kaliyadamana Krishna and dancing Ganesha. There are also a few bronze images of Devi and copper plates from the Vijayanagara period.
Open Air Gallery The important sculptures displayed in the open-air gallery were collected in Halebidu only. Some of them are in the reserve collection, which is another open-air gallery itself. The collection and display include different forms of Shiva and Vishnu. Shiva as Nataraja, Bhairava, and Vrishabhavahanamurthi. Gajasamharamurti. The different forms of Vishnu are Madhava, Keshava, Ugranarsimha, Lakshminarasimha, and Govardhanagiridhari Krishna. Dancing Parvati, Saraswati, and Ganesha; Skandha; Brahma; Madanikas; Yaksha and Yakshis; Jaina Tirthankaras; etc., are other interesting exhibits in the open-air gallery. Interestingly, some of the sculptures bear the label inscriptions, mentioning the names of the sculptors and architects. Viz., Bekana, Bocha (Ja), Naba, and Suma are among the sculptors and architects, and Biraya, Revoja, Kedaroja, Keroja, Mallitamma, Dasoja, Balaki, Ballana, Chavanna, and Baichoja are among the architects mentioned on the sculptures. The Hoysala sculptures in general are known for their plasticity and ornate style. The sculptures are rendered with a great sense of refinement and beauty. Some of the collections of this museum have been represented in Indian festivals conducted outside India. Govardhanagiridhari was displayed in France, Russia, the USA, the UK, and Japan during the festivals of India. Dancing Ganesha and Nataraja had been loaned to the Indian Museum Singapore on a term basis for quite a long duration of 20 years, and they were returned from Singapore in 2023. The majority of the sculptures displayed in the museum were originally part of the Hoysaleshwara Temple. Some of the sculptures are found at the different stages of their completion. The clearly hints that the Hoysaleshwara temple was either renovated or further additions were made in due course. The names of the master architects and sculptors found over the doorways and lintels establish that the temple was renovated during the time of Narasimha I. The doorways and perforated screens were possibly added. The different architectural components from adhisthana (basement) to Shikhara (superstructure) are preserved in the museum. These components were possibly formed as part of the temple. The names of the architects and sculptors, such as Kalidasi, Kedaroja, and Demoja, who made the doorways, are found on the lintels and cornices. Apart from the above-said exhibits, seated figures of Saraswathi, dancing Parvati, Ganesha, Kartikeya, and Couchant Bull are exquisitely carved.
Govardhanagiridhari This gracefully proportioned and densely detailed panel depicts Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, as Govardhana Giridhari, who bears Mount Govardhana. Mount Govardhana is imagined to be in Brindavana, home of the cow-herding community where Krishna spent his childhood and youth. Once, as people there increasingly followed Krishna, they stopped making offerings to Indra, the king of gods. To punish this negligence, Indra sent a torrential storm to flood and destroy the town. But Krishna lifted Govardhana mountain and sheltered the people and cattle. Realizing Krishna's supremacy, Indra returned to heaven. The Hoysala artist, who signed his name (Gumma Benna) below Krishna's left foot, has used the space of the wall panel creatively. Instead of the canopy of vines commonly carved, the sculpture is crowned by Mount Govardhana, which is populated by animals and plants and supported by Krishna's left hand. Below the mountain, humans and cattles in various poses are depicted by creating a lively scene.
Hero / Memorial Stones Combining text and image, this viragal (hero stone) commemorates Achchasahani, chief of the Hoysala army's camel force, who died fighting enemy forces led by one Sankamadeva. It follows the standard format of Hoysala period hero stones, but its imagery is particularly vigorous and refined. The lower panel depicts the battle; the middle with the deceased hero, seated in a palanquin and carried to heaven by beautiful celestial women; and at the top, having ascended to Sivaloka or Shiva's world, he worships a garlanded linga, the phallic symbol of the god, along with two priests and a bull, which may be Shiva's transport Nandi. The sun and the moon indicate that the hero has earned this blissful existence for eternity or as long as these bodies reign in the sky. The practice of commemorating heroes with such stones was common until recently; a person's capacity to endure and perpetrate violence, even committing self-sacrifice in the service of an overlord, was a valuable asset for kin and community. Usually, a relative of the deceased hero would commission the memorial. This stone was erected by the hero's wife, whom the inscription does not name.
Inscribed Stones The Archaeological Museum, Halebidu, has more than 35 inscribed stones. All are engraved on chloritic schist stones. They belong to both the Hindu and Jaina religions. Some of them are associated with the heroes. The script and language are Kannada, datable to the 12th-13th century CE. The depiction includes Vardhamana seated in a miniature shrine; the tapering tower above bears the miniature representations of five other Tirthankaras, and some with a Jain Tirthankara with a male figure to his right and a female devotee to the left. A few inscribed soapstone slabs bearing a Shiva emblem at the top and some with a semi-circular panel depicting a Shiva linga in the center and a priest offering pooja, ringing a bell, holding it in his left hand. The left end is a cow and a calf. The right side of the linga is Vishnu with Garuda. Some of the inscribed stones consist of three panels. The tower's most panel depicts the hero seated whose head is cut off. The head is possibly held by the hero himself. Who is seated in padmasana with horsemen to his left and another man to his right who is charging a sword-like object in his right hand. The second panel portrays the hero being lifted in a palanquin (to the heaven?). Flanked on either side by a flying female chauri bearer. The last panel depicts the hero attaining linga aikya.
